Cowley athletes open outdoor track and field season

track and field
Fresh off competing at the national indoor, the Cowley College men and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor season by hosting a meet on Thursday.

With Southwestern College’s track and field facility under construction, the Tigers helped host the seven-team Southwestern Invite in chilly conditions. Despite the cold weather, the Tiger track and field teams had some good early season performances.

“I am real pleased with some of the things we did,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said. “It was especially good to get a outdoor meet in early in the year.”

The Lady Tiger track and field team, which placed third at the national indoor meet, were led by sophomore Katie Phillips qualifying for nationals in the pole vault, and freshmen Leigh Ann Omarkhail and Allison Hoover qualifying for nationals in the 1,500-meter run and pole vault, respectively.

Richelle Farley set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles (15.44) and just missed qualifying for nationals. Farley’s time of 15.44 broke the previous school record of 15.59 set by Neisha Peterson in 2007.

Tiffany Wilcox also ran well and finished first in the 100-meter dash (12.65), while Cearra Reddig led Cowley in the throws events by placing first in the shot put (39-4).

The Tiger men were led by the performance of a newcomer to the team as Vondrell Harris, a transfer from Pratt Community College, hit the national qualifying mark in the high jump (6-6 ¾), and triple jump (47-11 ¾), while placing first in both events.

“I felt really good about his performances,” Phillips said.

Charles James, who placed sixth in the shot put at the national indoor, won the event on Thursday with a national qualifying mark of 49-7 ¾.

Sophomore T.J. Mapp also had a good day and won the 800 and 1,500-meter runs. Cowley’s Michael McLeod (pole vault) and Adrian Porter (long jump) also won events on Thursday.

With many of Cowley’s distance and middle distance runners that competed at nationals being held out of Thursday’s competition, Phillips anticipates having a full squad take part in the Tiger Invite held Saturday, March 27 in Arkansas City.

“We will go after as many national qualifying marks as possible,” Phillips said.
