Harris, Quill, and Farley break school records at WSU meet

The records continue to fall each meet out for the Cowley College men and women’s track and field teams. This time, Vondrell Harris, Ray Quill, and Richelle Farley broke their own school records, while competing at the Wichita State University K.T. Woodman Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Harris broke his school record in the high jump for the third straight meet and won the event by clearing 7-feet-1 inch.

Cowley head coach Mark Phillips was not surprised by Harris’ performance as the sophomore nearly cleared 7-2 ½ on his next two attempts.

“I can’s see him not clearing seven-feet every time he jumps, he is just a machine,” Phillips said.

Quill broke his school record in the 110-meter hurdles for the second time in as many chances and missed qualifying for nationals by three hundredths of a second as he placed sixth with a time of 14.81.

Farley, who finished first at the Tiger Heptathlon last Thursday, previously set the outdoor school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.44 in Cowley’s season opening meet. At WSU, Farley finished sixth with a time of 15.00. Wichita State’s Samantha Hallman won the event with a time of 14.30.

Farley and Quill each hit hurdles early in their races but were able to fight back and achieve school record times. In Farley’s case, she hit the hurdle so hard that she was in last place in her heat after the second hurdle, but came back to win her heat by almost five meters.

“Ray and Richelle both did a great job with smashed hurdles,” Phillips said.

Katie Gillmore continues to impress as she was the top collegian woman by clearing 12-feet-4 in the pole vault. Gillmore finished second in the event behind only Wichita State University graduate Brooke Demo, who cleared 12-10 ¼.

Freshman Allison Hoover also qualified for nationals in the pole vault by clearing 10-4 ¾, while Cecilia Burley (5;00.36) and Marvia Lewin (2:19.95) hit national qualifying times in the 1,500-meter and 800-meter runs, respectively.

On the men’s side, Pole vaulters Michael McLeod and Mark Butler tied for 12th in the event and qualified for nationals by clearing 14-9. Mason Putman also fared well and qualified for nationals in the hammer throw (157-6).

“I am real pleased with how we competed, but am most pleased with some of our performances in the field events,” Phillips said. “It was fun to compete against athletes from Wichita State, Kansas State, and Emporia State.”

Dustin Mettler, who last week signed to run at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, hit the Tigers other national qualifying mark over the weekend as he placed third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:58.91.

Cowley is awaiting word on which of its athletes have been accepted to compete at the KU Relays this Thursday through Saturday. Athletes not competing at the KU Relays will take part in the Tabor Invite on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
