Cowley 4x1-mile relay team breaks school record at KU Relays

Competing in one of the most prestigious events of the 83rd annual KU Relays held Thursday through Saturday in Lawrence, the Cowley College men’s 4x1-mle relay team broke the school record and placed third in the event with a time of 17:32.26.

The Tiger track and field teams went head-to-head with NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NAIA, and JUCO programs at the meet. The Tigers’ 4x1-mile relay team finished third behind only the University of Kansas and Iowa Central.

Brice Irving ran the first mile in 4:20, Dustin Mettler ran the second mile in 4:19, while Josh Gracia (4:22) and T.J. Mapp (4:28) rounded out the school record performance.

“A lot of coaches at the meet were pretty impressed by that time,” Cowley assistant coach Vince DeGrado said. “I was excited about their performance because we don’t get many opportunities to run a 4x1 (mile) relay.”

The Cowley men also got top-10 finishes from its 4x880-yard relay team (Jory Custar, Brice Irving, T.J. Mapp, and Thomas Kjerengtroen), and distance medley relay team (David Phillips, Dylan Filburn, Dane Dewitt, and Colin Jokisch), which placed sixth and eighth, respectively.

Freshman Josh Gracia also had a strong showing in the 5,000-meter run and placed ninth with a national qualifying time of 14:55.97.

On the women’s side, Cowley was led by its 4x880-yard relay team (Marvia Lewin, Leigh Ann Omarkhail, Val Bland, and Cecilia Burley), which finished fourth with a national qualifying time of 9:42.50.

The Lady Tigers’ distance medley relay team of Omarkhail, Richelle Farley, Lewin, and Purity Cheruiyot placed ninth with a time of 12:55.88. While, Katie Gillmore cleared 11-11 ¾ in the pole vault and finished seventh, and Cecilia Burley claimed 10th place in the 5,000-meter run (18:20.66).

A few Tiger athletes competed at the Tabor Invite on Wednesday. Gillmore won the women’s pole vault by clearing 12-feet-1. Thomas Kjerengtroen and Alstin Benton ran well for the men’s team and placed second in the 800 and 1,500-meter runs, respectively.

With Southwestern College’s track facility under construction, Cowley College will play host to the Southwestern Relays on Saturday. Events will begin at 11:15 a.m.
