Tiger track teams play host to Southwestern Relays

With Southwestern College’s track facility under construction, Cowley College played host to the Southwestern Relays on Saturday.

The Tigers had some good performances as three school records were broken and 15 national qualifying marks were hit.

“We were real pleased with a lot of our performances,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said.

Other schools at the meet were, Southwestern College, West Texas A&M, Oklahoma Christian University, Tabor College, Friends University, Allen County, Butler Community College, Coffeyville, Dodge City, Neosho County, Oklahoma Baptist University, University of Missouri at Kansas City, and Southern Nazarene University.

Cowley had two women’s track records fall as Richelle Farley placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.61, and the 4x800-meter relay team of Marvia Lewin, Leigh Ann Omarkhail, Val Bland, and Cecilia Burley finished second with a school-record time of 9:26.78.

“That core group of girls on the relay team continue to amaze,” Phillips said.

Phillips is especially pleased with the way freshmen Leigh Ann Omarkhail and Val Bland have progressed throughout the year.

“What those two young ladies have done has been incredible,” Phillips said.

With Robin Ray placing first in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs, Bland earned the squad’s lone new national qualifying mark by placing seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:07.49.

Marvia Lewin (800-meter run) and Katie Gillmore (pole vault) had the Lady Tigers’ other first place finishes at the meet.

Sophomore Jory Custar, who was an All-American during the indoor track season, broke the men’s school record in the 800-meter run with a first place time of 1:52.42.

Dustin Mettler also performed well and won the 1,500 (3:58.96) and 5,000-meter runs (15:27.74). While, Vondrell Harris continued to shine in the triple jump and finished first with a leap of 49-7 ¼.

Cowley will now prepare to compete at the Dean Pryor Invite in Coffeyville Saturday at noon. Cowley will host the pole vault portion of the Dean Pryor Invite Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Tiger Track and Field Complex.

The Tigers will hold out most of its distance runners and will compete with mainly field event athletes.
“This meet will be a tune up for the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference meet in two weeks,” Phillips said.
