Tigers take partial squads to compete at Coffeyville

With the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships set to begin on Thursday, a small contingent of Cowley College track and field athletes took part in the Coffeyville Dean Pryor Invitational this past Saturday.

The performance of the squads’ pole vaulters highlighted the meet as Mark Butler won the men’s pole vault (15-1 ½) and Michael McLeod (14-9) placed third. Each athlete hit national qualifying marks.

Lady Tiger sophomore Katie Gillmore continued to dominate the pole vault by placing first in the women’s event with a national qualifying mark of 12-0 ½.

The Tigers did face some adversity at the meet as sophomore Ray Quill, the school’s record holder in the long jump and 110-meter hurdles, suffered a season ending injury.

“Ray has struggled with injuries this year and he had recently started feeling better, so this was really unfortunate for him,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said.

The Tiger men will attempt to win its fourth straight conference title when they compete in the conference/region championships in Overland Park.

“We are still the favorites to win conference and will be in a battle with Barton County and Butler for the region title,” Phillips said.

The Lady Tigers, which finished the indoor season as the conference and region champions, will look to duplicate that feet at the outdoor meet.

“We have the opportunity to win conference and feel it’s our region meet to lose,” Phillips said.

Cowley’s main competition at the meet will come from Coffeyville and Barton County.

The Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships will begin Thursday with the Heptathlon/Decathlon on Thursday. The rest of the events will begin Friday at 3 p.m.
