Relay teams lead the way during second day of national track meet

trackCompeting in near perfect conditions, the Cowley College track and field teams have had some good performances Friday at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Hutchinson.

One day after Robin Ray finished as the national runner-up in the 10,000-meter run; both the Tiger men and women’s 4x800-meter relay teams placed third and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.

The men’s 4x800-meter relay team (7:46.14) was made up of Brice Irving, T.J. Mapp, David Phillips, and Dane Dewitt. The women’s relay team (9:20.62) consisted of Marvia Lewin, Leigh Ann Omarkhail, Jessica Dyer, and Cecilia Burley.

Freshman Charles James, who was seeded 10th in the shot put entering the tournament, also performed well and placed fourth with a season-best shot put of 51-11 ¼.

Richelle Farley, who broke two school records on Thursday, finished seventh in the heptathlon, which consisted of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run.

Sophomore Mac Griffith is currently fourth in the decathlon with two events (javelin, 1,500-meter run) remaining.

Cowley’s track and field teams will look to continue scoring points tonight and during Saturday’s final day of competition.
