Lady Tigers pick up 10th win with 62-38 victory over Dodge City

Bouncing back from a tough 60-55 loss to No. 16-ranked Seward County on Friday, the Cowley College women’s basketball team wrapped up play in the Jayhawk Shootout with a 62-38 win over Dodge City Sunday in Coffeyville.

“I am proud of the way they came back from Friday, they handled it better than I thought they would,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

On Sunday, the Lady Tigers put the game away early as they led 32-13 at the end of the first half and were not threatened in the second half of the 24-point win. The victory improves Cowley’s record to 10-5 on the season, while Dodge City falls to 2-14.

Cowley held Dodge City to 21 percent shooting in the first half and 33 percent shooting for the game. The Lady Tigers rank second in the Jayhawk Conference in points allowed per game (52.8).
Lady Tiger freshman Maylisa Johnson finished with a season-high 15 points, while also adding six rebounds and six steals.

“I thought that was one of her better games this season,” Clark said.
Gianna Woods continued her solid play by adding 15 points and six rebounds. Woods, who is shooting a team-best 52.5 percent, made 7-of-10 shots from the floor.

Sophomore Robin Parker led the Lady Conquistadors with 15 points and six rebounds.
Cowley will return to conference play when they travel to Independence Wednesday to take on the Lady Pirates at 6 p.m.

After opening the season with nine straight wins, Independence has now dropped four straight to fall to 9-4 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East.

Independence is 6-1 at home with its only loss coming by four points (57-53) to Johnson County.
“They are very good, especially at their place,” Clark said. “We hope to be competitive and get a chance to sneak out with a win.”

Independence is led by 5-foot-10 sophomore Sadie Webb, who averages 18.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

The game can be heard on KSOK Radio 95.9 FM.
