Woods scores 32 as Cowley stomps Neosho County 89-43

Jasamyne SaundersGetting a season-high 32 points from Gianna Woods, the Cowley College women’s basketball team had no trouble getting past Neosho County 89-43 Saturday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Lady Tigers shot a season high 59.3 percent from the floor as they recorded their highest point total on the season. The victory keeps Cowley just a half game back of Labette in the conference. Cowley will host Coffeyville tonight at 5 p.m. The Lady Red Ravens, which have dropped two games in a row, are 16-5 overall and 6-3 in the Jayhawk East.

On Saturday, Cowley scored the game’s first eight points and led 31-6 following a basket by Woods with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. Woods would score 20 first half points and Cowley shot 68 percent in the game’s first 20 minutes of play as they built a 45-16 lead.

Many of the Lady Tigers’ baskets came off turnovers as they forced Neosho County into 16 first half turnovers and 30 turnovers in the game.

“I was really pleased with almost all aspects of what we did in the first half,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Woods had 30 points midway through the second half as she went 12-20 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

“She was more active than she has been and had a good night all around,” Clark said.

Point guard Ariani Silva added 14 points and nine assists, while Jasamyne Saunders (pictured) came off the bench to finish with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. Maggie Vieyra also played well of the bench, chipping in with seven points and three steals.

Bjonee Reaves was the only Neosho player in double figures as she finished with 12 points. The Lady Panthers are now 8-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Cowley, winners of three games in a row, will now look to get past conference foe Coffeyville tonight at home. The Lady Tigers won at Coffeyville 45-35 on Dec. 2. Prior to the game on Dec. 2, no team had won by more than two points in the head-to-head matchups in the previous four meetings.

“It’s a rivalry deal, you never know how emotions will play into it,” Clark said. “I hope we play well and shoot well to give us confidence. I also hope we have a good crowd turnout, we need the support.”
