Lady Tigers continue surge with 68-52 win over Coffeyville
Out-toughing the visiting Coffeyville Lady Red Ravens Monday at W.S.
Scott Auditorium, the Cowley College women’s basketball team
picked up an impressive 68-52 win as they improved to 9-2 in the Jayhawk
Conference Eastern Division.
After allowing only 35 points in a 45-35 win at Coffeyville on Dec. 2,
the Red Ravens nearly matched their point total from the previous game
in the first half as the teams went into the half with the score tied
29-29.
“We were a little confused defensively in the first half, they were running
some stuff we were unfamiliar with,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “We
had a talk at halftime and I thought we guarded much better in the second half.”
Cowley took it to Coffeyville in the final 20 minutes of play as they
scored the first nine points of the second half and built a 10-point
lead (44-34) following a basket by sophomore Gianna Woods with 13 minutes
left. Woods scored 13 points in each half as Cowley led by as many as
18 points in the win.
Woods finished with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds. Kaneesha Lee
and Maylisa Johnson added 14 and 11 points, respectively, while also
grabbing eight rebounds a piece. Cowley dominated the boards as they
out-rebounded Coffeyville 40-24.
“Our rebounding was huge for us,” Clark said.
After having only two points and two assists at halftime, freshman point
guard Ariana Silva directed the Tiger offense in the second half. Silva
would finish with 10 points, six assists, five steals and only one turnover.
Sophomore Tasha Cannon led Coffeyville with 13 points and six rebounds,
while Sheay Longstaff went 4-of-7 from three-point range and finished
with 13 points. The Lady Red Ravens have now lost three games in a row
to fall into fourth place in the Jayhawk East. Coffeyville is 16-6 overall
and 6-4 in the conference.
Cowley, winners of four in a row and 13 of its last 15, will play at
Allen County Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Lady Red Devils have lost five in
a row and are 7-14 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
Despite Allen County’s record, Clark knows his team will need to
be ready to play on Wednesday.
“We have always struggled playing at Allen,” Clark said. “We
will need to go over there and play well.”
Cowley remains one half game behind conference leading Labette.
