Lady Tigers beat Allen County for fifth straight win

For the second straight game the Cowley College women’s basketball team ended the first half tied with its opponent at 29-29. Just like in Monday’s win over Coffeyville, the Lady Tigers came out of the locker room a different team as they out-scored Allen County 33-15 in the second half of Wednesday’s game in Iola to win 62-44.

Over the past two games Cowley has outscored Coffeyville and Allen County by a combined score of 72-38 in the second half.

“We shot the ball a lot better in the second half,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “This is a hard place to play so I am just pleased we got the win.”

Freshman point guard Ariana Silva came up big as she scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the game’s final 20 minutes of play. Sophomore center Gianna Woods continued her stellar play by adding 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. And fellow sophomore post player Kaneesha Lee chipped in with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Maylisa Johnson was not asked to score much witnessed by her making her only shot attempt, but what Johnson did do was run the Tigers’ offense nearly flawless as she recorded a season-high 11 assists with no turnovers.

Cowley out-scored Allen County 25-7 over the first 15 minutes of the second half and out-shot the Lady Red Devils 46 percent to 24 percent after halftime.

Allen County, which is now 7-15 overall and 1-9 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, was led by Breanna Shaw’s 13 points.

The victory, Cowley’s fifth in a row, improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the conference. Cowley remains only a half game behind conference-leading Labette (10-1).

The Lady Tigers will be back in action Saturday when they host Independence at 5 p.m. The Lady Pirates (14-7 overall, 5-5 Jayhawk East) have dropped two games in a row following a five-game winning streak.
“It’s important for us to get better each game out,” Clark said.
