Lady Tigers go cold in 62-47 loss to Independence

Ariani SilvaHaving a tough night shooting the basketball and grabbing rebounds, the Cowley College women’s basketball team suffered a 62-47 home loss against Independence Saturday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Cowley shot just 32.7 percent and were out-rebounded 40-21. The loss snapped the Lady Tigers’ five-game winning streak and dropped their record to 17-7 overall and 10-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Cowley is now a game and a half behind conference leading Labette and one game ahead of third place Johnson County.

On Saturday, Cowley went five minutes before scoring and Independence made 6-of-10 three-pointers as they built a 31-20 halftime lead. Post players Gianna Woods and Kaneesha Lee scored 16 of the Lady Tigers’ 20 first half points and made seven of the team’s eight field goals.

The Lady Pirates’ lead would quickly balloon to 16 points (36-20) early in the second half. Cowley would cut Independence’s lead to nine points on three occasions, but after a basket by Lee made the score 50-41 with 4:03 remaining, the Lady Pirates put the game away by scoring 12 straight points.

“This was very disappointing, we really couldn’t score and they were more physical than we were,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “We just did not do a lot of things right.”

Independence sophomore Sadie Webb led all scorers with 22 points. Fellow sophomore Tori Halverson finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Pirates finished the game 8-of-13 from three-point range compared to the Tigers going 0-for-5 from long range. Independence is now 15-7 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

Woods led Cowley with 16 points and Lee added 10 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. The duo combined to make 11-of-26 shots from the floor, while the rest of the team went just 6-of-26.

Cowley will now prepare to host Johnson County in an important conference game Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Lady Cavaliers, ranked second in NJCAA Division II, are 20-3 overall and 8-3 in the Jayhawk East.

“We need a better effort on Wednesday, we have got to play harder and more physical,” Clark said.
