Having lost by 32 points at Seminole State College on Nov. 5, the Cowley
College women’s basketball team showed how much they have improved
since then as they defeated Seminole 70-59 Tuesday at W.S. Scott Auditorium
for the team’s fourth straight win.
In the first meeting between the two teams, the Belles shot 67 percent
in the second half. On Tuesday, Seminole shot just 28 percent for the
game.
“I think defensively we are starting to figure some things out,” Cowley
head coach Todd Clark said. “We are playing together as a group.”
Cowley led 34-26 at the end of the first half thanks to 10 first half
points a piece from Kaneesha Lee and Anna Sonka. The Lady Tigers’ lead
would grow to 12 points (41-29) on a three-pointer by Sonka with 16 minutes
left to play, and the Belles would get no closer than within five points
of Cowley the rest of the way.
Sophomore Kaneesha Lee had another big game for the Lady Tigers as she
finished with a career-high 26 points. Lee also added eight rebounds
and four blocked shots as she dominated inside.
“She got a lot of easy looks at the basket because we were moving the
ball really well,” Clark said.
Freshman Maylisa Johnson assisted on many of Lee’s baskets as she
finished with a season-high 11 assists.
“She really shares the basketball well and we are putting her in spots
where she can do stuff with the ball,” Clark said.
Fellow sophomore Gianna Woods joined Lee in giving Cowley a one-two punch
as she finished with 11 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. While,
Sonka played perhaps her best game of the season by finishing with 15
points and five rebounds. Sonka was 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-for-3
from three-point range.
Teshia Griswold’s 15 points and eight rebounds led the Belles.
Katie Sanderson and Trelishiea Prince added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Seminole is now 8-5 on the season.
Cowley, which is now 7-4 on the season, will play its final game of the
first semester on Saturday when they play the Southwestern JV at 1 p.m.
in Winfield.
“I want to see us continue to improve defensively and play together on
offense,” Clark said. “It is important to end on a positive note.”
