Going
up against some good competition at the Friends University Invitational
held Friday in Goddard, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College women’s
cross country team placed second behind meet champion Fort Hays State
University by only two points.
The Lady Tigers had some impressive performances in finishing a close
runner-up to the NCAA Division II Fort Hays State Tigers.
“I was really happy about the performances of our women’s team,
but I wanted to win,” Cowley head coach Vince DeGrado said.
Cowley was led by sophomore Robin Ray’s third place finish in the
5K race. Ray’s time of 19:05 placed her behind only runner-up Jordan
Arnold (18:42) from Friends University, and individual meet champion,
Amy Pierson (18:36) of Southwestern College.
“Robin is on fire right now, I look for her to be a force all year,” DeGrado
said.
Arkansas City freshman Valerie Bland placed 11th with a time of 19:50
to help the Lady Tigers cause.
“Valerie is going to be really good for us and will start closing the
gap with Robin,” DeGrado said.
Cecilia Burley (20:02) and Bailey Hawkins (20:03) were right behind Bland
as they placed 13th and 14th, respectively.
The Lady Tigers will now prepare to take part in the Missouri Southern
Stampede, which will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. in Joplin, MO.
“This
is a big race, it will be a good test for us,” DeGrado said.
