Getting
three first half goals from sophomore forward Amber Hernandez, the Cowley
College women’s soccer team defeated Metropolitan Community College-Blue
River 3-0 Saturday in Arkansas City.
After a slow start to the game, Hernandez tallied her first goal at the
16:50 mark of the first half. Hernandez would add two more goals off
assists from former high school teammate, Sadie Hull, to give her 10
goals on the season.
“Sadie and Amber work really well together,” Cowley head coach
Dane Straight said. “There are not many players Amber can’t outrun
and Sadie has the ability to run all day.”
Cowley was playing its first game since learning sophomore midfielder
Carol Rodrigues could miss several weeks due to an elbow injury suffered
in the team’s game against Northern Oklahoma College last Tuesday.
Cowley will also be without sophomore defender Ana Borjas for an unknown
period of time as she suffered an injury in Saturday’s game.
Banged up as they were, Cowley continued to press forward as they improved
to 2-2 on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Ybarra needed to make
only two saves in recording her second shutout of the season.
“Our defense did a really good job in limiting where they could take
their shots from,” Straight said.
Cowley will next travel to Dodge City to take on the Lady Conquistadors
Wednesday at 2 p.m. Dodge City is 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk
Conference, while Cowley is 1-0 in conference play.
“Dodge City is always going to fight and will come out ready to play,” Straight
said. “We need to be ready and try to put the game away in the first
half.”
