Giardini scores five goals in Barton County’s win over Lady Tigers

Amber HernandezUnable to slow down Barton County’s Shala Giardini, the Cowley College women’s soccer team suffered an 8-1 loss to the Lady Cougars Saturday in Arkansas City.

Cowley head coach Dane Straight was impressed by Giardini, a freshman from Greeley, CO.

“She got going early and we could not contain her,” Straight said. “There outside midfielders are quick, they just flooded us continuously.”

Giardini scored two goals in the first nine minutes of Saturday’s game and Barton County raced out to a 5-0 lead before Cowley’s Amber Hernandez scored Cowley’s lone goal of the contest. The goal by Hernandez was her team-leading 13th of the season.

Barton County would add three goals in the second half as they improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The loss was Cowley’s first in the Jayhawk Conference as they are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

“Obviously we are not happy with the loss or the score, but we fought and did not give up the whole game,” Straight said.

Cowley will attempt to get back on track when they play at Garden City Wednesday at 5 p.m. Garden City is 1-3 in the Jayhawk Conference.

“I want to see us bounce back from this and not take Garden City lightly,” Straight said. “We have got to come out and be physical and aggressive from the starting whistle.”
