Lady Tiger soccer improves to 3-1 in Jayhawk Conference

Playing at Garden City Wednesday, the Cowley College women’s soccer team picked up its second straight road win by a score of 3-1.

The significance of the victory could not be understated as the Lady Tigers improved to 3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference and eclipsed last year’s number of road wins (1).

“This was definitely big for us considering the last two road games (at Dodge City and Garden City) were two of our longest trips and were played on turf,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said. “Any time you can go on the road and pick up a win is big.”

Cowley got first half goals from Amber Hernandez and Ciara Corboy to lead 2-0. Hernandez would add her 15th goal of the season to increase Cowley’s lead to 3-0 with 24:04 remaining. It looked like Lady Tigers goalie Katie Ybarra might record her fourth shutout of the season until Garden City was awarded a penalty kick due to a hand ball in the box. Marissa Castillo scored on the penalty kick with 5:53 left, but the Lady Tigers held on to win 3-1.

Cowley out-shot Garden City 28-10 as they improved to 4-3 on the season. The Lady Busters fell to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Along with Corboy scoring her third goal of the season, she added two assists.

“She played a phenomenal game and was really causing problems for the keeper,” Straight said.

Straight has been pleased not only with Hernandez’s play on the field but also by her serving as a leader.
“She has started to step up and take on that leadership role and the team has responded,” Straight said.

Cowley will now prepare to host a rematch on Friday versus Hutchinson, a team that beat the Lady Tigers 11-0 in its season opener. Hutchinson is 6-0-1 overall and tied for first in the conference at 4-0.

“We want to improve over the last time we played them, Hutchinson has a good team but we think we are better than an 11-goal deficit,” Straight said. “We have got to come out and play tighter defense on Friday.”
Friday’s game will begin at 4 p.m.
