As they have done each time this season following a loss, the Cowley
College women’s soccer team bounced
back with a victory. This time, the Lady Tigers won at Northeastern Oklahoma
5-1 Wednesday in Miami, OK.
Last season, Cowley lost by a similar score at Northeastern Oklahoma,
so Wednesday’s win provided Lady Tiger head coach Dane Straight
with some satisfaction.
“It felt good, I was very happy to get a win there,” Straight
said. “It was an overall team effort, we were able to get some other
people involved which was good for us.”
Cowley entered the contest already without Carol Rodrigues, Ana Borjas
and Jessica Venn, and had several other players get nicked up during
the game. However, the players that come off the bench provided Cowley
with some valuable minutes.
Cowley was able to jump on top early as Amber Hernandez scored the first
of her three goals 11 minutes into the game. Ciara Corboy and Sadie Hull
would add first half goals, while Hernandez netted another goal to put
Cowley ahead 4-0 at the end of the first half.
Hernandez would increase the Lady Tigers’ lead to 4-0 as she scored
her 18th goal of the season off an assist from Corboy with a little less
than 15 minutes remaining.
“Amber was very efficient and able to finish her shots,” Straight
said. “She also got other people involved which was good for us.”
Cowley goalkeeper, Katie Ybarra, nearly recorded her fourth shutout of
the season but it was not to be as NEO’s Arielle Santillan scored
with 5:10 left to play.
Cassandra Tarin and Stephanie Bearare had assists in the game as Cowley
improved to 5-4 on the season. Also playing well for Cowley was Brittany
Newbolt and Jerrika Keirn.
The Lady Tigers will host 12th ranked Butler Community College Saturday
at 6 p.m. The Lady Grizzlies are 9-3-1 overall and 4-0 in the Jayhawk
Conference.
