Lady Tigers beat Coffeyville 3-1, move into fifth place in conference
In what is becoming a pattern, the Cowley College women’s soccer
team was able to bounce back from a loss in its previous game to win
its next contest. This time, the Lady Tigers put Saturday’s loss
to Butler behind them and won at Coffeyville Tuesday by a score of 3-1.
The victory moves Cowley into fifth place in the Jayhawk Conference as
the Lady Tigers are now 6-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
“Following a loss the girls want to make sure to get back on track, they
do not like to lose,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said. “The
biggest thing about this win is we picked up three points on the road.”
On Tuesday, Cowley got goals from three different players. Amber Hernandez,
who finished with two assists, also added her 19th goal of the season
to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 halftime lead.
Ciara Corboy would increase Cowley’s lead to 2-0 as she scored
her sixth goal of the season just 1:24 into the second half. However,
Coffeyville cut Cowley’s lead to 2-1 on Alyson Sparkman’s
goal with 30:58 remaining in the contest.
Clinging to a one-goal lead with less than two minutes left to play,
Hernandez delivered a beautiful corner kick to the right post and Sadie
Hull got to the ball and put it past Red Raven goalkeeper Serah Odeke
to ice the game.
The goal by Hull was her third of the season.
“That goal relieved a lot of tension,” Straight said. “Sadie
is really coming into her own playing in the center midfield position.”
Cowley has allowed only three goals in its six wins and has out-scored
the opposition by a combined score of 25-3 in those contests. The loss
drops Coffeyville’s record to 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
The Lady Tigers should have no problem in its next contest as they will
travel to play at winless Independence Community College Thursday at
2 p.m. The Lady Pirates have been out-scored 130-0 in its 11 games played
this season.
However, Straight will make sure his team will not be overlooking the
struggling Lady Pirates.
“As a coach you understand you can’t take anybody lightly,” Straight
said. “We are going to have to pick up our intensity in order to play
the way we should.”
