Lady Tiger soccer shuts out Hesston 4-0
With its defense helping Katie Ybarra record her fourth shutout of the
season in a 4-0 win at Hesston on Saturday, the Cowley College women’s
soccer team moved two games over .500 for the first time this season.
The Lady Tigers, winners of three of their last four games, are now 7-5
overall and 5-3 in Region VI play. Cowley is in fifth place out of 13
teams in the region.
Cowley has allowed only five goals in its last four games and only three
goals in its seven wins. Ybarra needed to make only two saves in Saturday’s
win as Cowley had 31 more shots (37-6) than the Lady Larks, who fell
to 0-13 on the season.
“We really kind of dominated the game, Katie did not face much pressure
at all,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said. “My philosophy was
to have the girls run, run, run because otherwise they would get cold. Our
defense held up and ran the play from the back. Brittany Newbolt and Brittany
Griffin had great games for us.”
With the teams scoreless through the first 20 minutes of play, Cowley
finished the half strong as they scored a pair of goals to lead 2-0 at
the end of the first half. The Lady Tigers would score two more goals
early in the second half to win 4-0.
Amber Hernandez continued to be a goal-scoring machine as she scored
two more goals to give her 21 on the season. Ciara Corboy and Sadie Hull
added a goal and an assist each. Corboy now has seven goals on the season,
while Hull has four.
The Lady Tigers will return home to take on Johnson County tonight at
4 p.m. The Lady Cavaliers are 10-5 overall and 8-2 in the region.
“Tonight will be a very important game, Johnson County has always been
a strong program,” Straight said. “It would be a huge confidence
booster for us if we were able to win, and would help us as we head into the
final games of the season.”
