Lady Tiger soccer becomes another shutout victim of Johnson County

soccerGetting shutout 7-0 Monday in Arkansas City, the Cowley College women’s soccer team became the 11the team to be shutout by Johnson County this season.

Lady Cavalier goalkeeper Kelly Voigts continued her stellar freshman season by stopping the only four shots she faced. Voigts has allowed only 14 goals in 16 games as Johnson County is now 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.

“Johnson County has a good team but I honestly don’t believe they are seven goals better than us,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said. “I couldn’t pin point anything we did really poorly, I just think mentally we weren’t quite ready to go.”

Johnson County scored three goals in the first half and four more in the second half as six different players scored for the Lady Cavaliers. Sophomore midfielder Jaime Hertling was the lone player to finish with two goals.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Lady Tigers and drops Cowley’s record to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Cowley is now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference with Allen County and Coffeyville, while Johnson County is second in the conference behind Hutchinson.

The Lady Tigers will have a golden opportunity to get back in the win column as they will play at winless Independence Community College Friday at 3 p.m. The Lady Pirates are 0-13 on the season and have been outscored 146-0.

“As much as what their record states we still need to take them seriously,” Straight said. “We need to figure out what we did wrong against Johnson County and come out mentally ready to go.”
