Lady Tiger soccer annihilates Independence 11-1
Scoring a season-high 11 goals, the Cowley College women’s soccer
team blasted overmatched Independence Community College 11-1 Friday in
Independence.
Despite taking 59 shots, 25 of which were on goal, only three Lady Tigers
scored in the win. Amber Hernandez registered her third, five-goal game
of the season, as she now has 26 goals on the year. Ciara Corboy added
four goals to give her 11 on the season, while Sadie Hull scored the
other two goals and has six on the year.
The trio of Hernandez, Corboy and Hull also combined for five assists
as Cowley improved to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the Jayhawk Conference.
“All three players, Amber, Ciara, and Sadie, just really dominated the
attack and worked really well together,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight
said.
Cowley led 6-0 before Independence got a goal from Sondra Smith with
8:17 left in the first half. The goal may seem insignificant, but it
was the first of the season for the Lady Pirates, who are now 0-16 overall
and 0-11 in the conference.
Cowley will be back in action tonight when they host Neosho County at
5 p.m. in the team’s final regular season home game. The Lady Tigers
are tied with Neosho County for fifth place in the 13-team region.
“Tonight is a very important match for us, we have got to get points
in the game in order to move ahead of Neosho County,” Straight said. “It
will be a challenge, but we look forward to having them here. Neosho County
handed us the first defeat in the school’s history, so we would like
to avenge that.”
