Lady Tigers drop match at Oklahoma Christian
Playing just its second match of the season, the Cowley College women’s
tennis team lost at Oklahoma Christian University 7-2 on Friday.
The Lady Tigers, which are sixth in the NJCAA rankings, found wins hard
to come by against the Lady Eagles, which are currently 12th in the NAIA
tennis rankings.
Cowley played the match without sophomore Jessica Montemayor, who stayed
back in Arkansas City due to an illness. Montemayor played No. 3 singles
and No. 2 doubles in the Lady Tigers’ season opening match against
the University of Central Oklahoma on Feb. 18.
“We had a challenge already, but with Jessica missing it made it that
much harder,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said. “We still competed
hard and had opportunities to make the score a little closer than it was.”
Sophomore Adrijana Pavlovic was a bright spot in the defeat as she won
her match at No. 1 singles over OCU’s Olfa Dhaoni 6-3, 6-7, 10-5,
and also teamed with Jamie Blackim to win at No. 2 doubles.
Pavlovic and Blackim trailed 6-3 in its match against Oklahoma Christian’s
Maja Vazem and Maja Plavsic before winning five straight games to take
the match 8-6.
“They put together a good run and got the momentum on their side,” Cobble
said. “Adrijana had good focus all day long and played really well.”
Cowley will now prepare to take on Hesston College and Bethel College
Thursday in Hesston. The match vs. Hesston will take place at 9 a.m.
and the match vs. Bethel will begin at 1 p.m.
“Those are two matches we feel we should win if we take care of business,” Cobble
said.
