Lady Tiger tennis tripped up in return to action

tennisPlaying its first match in 20 days, the No. 6-ranked Cowley College women’s tennis team came up just a bit short in a 5-4 loss to Southern Nazarene University (OK) Friday in Arkansas City.

Early on it appeared the lay off would not have much of an effect on the Lady Tigers as they started out by winning two of three doubles matches. However, Southern Nazarene, No. 12 in the NAIA rankings, came back to win four of six singles matches to leave victorious.

“We were maybe not as sharp because of the long break, but I thought they worked hard and were very competitive,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said. “I hope this match will help us get back in the groove of things.”
Cowley got wins from its No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams, while Adrijana Pavlovic won at No. 1 singles and Brittney Laner was victorious at No. 6 singles.

Cowley will play host to Seward County today at 2 p.m. at the J.C. Louderback Tennis Courts.

“I hope we will be a little sharper than we were on Friday,” Cobble said.

The match will be the first of seven this week for the Lady Tigers as Cowley will play a pair of matches on Tuesday and four matches over the weekend.

Cobble is looking forward to the busy week of competition.

“This should help us get match toughness for the tournaments at the end of the year, and help push us towards our goals,” Cobble said. “We will see what we are made of.”
