Lady Tiger tennis team makes statement against Johnson County

Showing they are still the team to beat heading into next weekend’s Region VI Tournament in Wichita, the No. 6-ranked Cowley College women’s tennis team destroyed Johnson County 7-2 Thursday in Overland Park.

The Lady Tigers started the match by winning all three doubles matches and then proceeded to win four of six singles matches. Cowley is now 11-5 on the season.

“We played against a good team and this match was good for us heading into the region tournament,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said. “The matches we lost were winnable matches. I think we can turn those around next weekend in Wichita.”

All three of Cowley’s doubles teams and four of its six singles players that won on Thursday have clinched No. 1 seeds at the Region VI Tournament, which will be played Friday and Saturday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Courts.

“Having those No. 1 seeds will serve as a nice advantage for us,” Cobble said.

The only two players that lost, sophomores Jessica Montemayor and Natalia Medina, will likely still be No. 2 seeds at the tournament.

Adrijana Pavlovic and Jamie Blackim won easily at No. 1 singles (8-3) and then coasted to wins in singles play. Pavlovic defeated Johnson County’s Haley Craig 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Blackim had no trouble in beating Gina Wattenbarger 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles competition.

Wrylie Finkle and Brittney Laner picked up the Lady Tigers’ other singles wins on Thursday.

Cowley will open play at the Region VI Tournament in Wichita on Friday at 9 a.m. Last year, Cowley won five of six singles titles and all three doubles titles en route to capturing the region title.

“We will go in confident, but will also need to go into each match thinking of it as the most important match we have played all year long,” Cobble said.
