Lady Tiger tennis team makes it back-to-back region titles

Led by its seven sophomores, the Cowley College women’s tennis team made it back-to-back Region VI titles by finishing well ahead of second place Johnson County at the region tournament played Friday and Saturday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Center.

The Lady Tigers finished 5.5 points better than second place Johnson County (24.5-19) as they qualified to compete at the NJCAA National Tournament held May 2-6 in Tucson, AZ.

With its entire lineup consisting of sophomores, Cowley used its experience to capture five of six singles titles and two of three doubles titles.

“These girls have done a phenomenal job the last two years,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said. “To repeat as region champions is a tough challenge because you have got that bulls eye on you as the favorite to win. To their credit, the girls were able to stay mentally tough.”

Adrijana Pavlovic, Jamie Blackim, Natalia Medina, and Brittney Laner repeated as region champions in singles play. While, Wrylie Finkle made up for a three-set defeat in the finals of last year’s tournament by defeating Johnson County’s Sydney Ramsey 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-2 in the finals of No. 5 singles.

“It was great to see Wrylie come out and get that region title,” Cobble said.

Adrijana Pavlovic and Jamie Blackim went on to finish as region champions at No. 1 doubles, and Jessica Montemayor and Brittney Laner took home the title at No. 2 doubles.

“To win seven of nine flights, everybody stepped up and did a great job,” Cobble said.

Cowley, which moved up to No. 4 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, will enjoy winning the region title for a day or two before switching its focus to the national tournament.

The Lady Tigers placed eighth at last year’s national tournament.

“With the experience we have we will go in better prepared than we were last year,” Cobble said. “I look for a good performance from us at the national tournament.”

By finishing in the top-three teams at the region tournament, Cowley, Johnson County, and Seward County will each compete at the national tournament.
