Lady Tiger tennis tied for sixth after second day of national tourney

With its top-two singles and doubles teams advancing to the quarterfinals on Monday, the Cowley College women’s tennis team is currently tied for sixth place at the NJCAA National Championship held in Tucson, AZ.

Cowley sophomores Adrijana Pavlovic and Jessica Montemayor improved to 2-0 at the national tournament by picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The duo also helped the Lady Tigers’ No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams win their second straight matches.

“They have done a phenomenal job and have put themselves in a position to keep earning points,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said.

Wrylie Finkle won her first match in the consolation bracket, while she also teamed with Shannon Franz to win a consolation match at No. 3 doubles.

After two days of competition, Cowley is tied for sixth place with Johnson County with 16 points. The Lady Tigers are only one point in back of fifth place Florida Community College at Jacksonville, and just two points behind Collin Community College for fourth place.

“I look forward to more good tennis from our players today and hope to steal some points from those teams that are just ahead of us,” Cobble said.

Tyler Junior College is in first place at the tournament with 27 points, while Lee Community College is second with 25 points, and Hillsborough Community College is third with 22.5 points.
