Cowley moves into sole possession of fourth place at national tournament

Playing at the NJCAA National Championships in Tucson, AZ, the Cowley College women’s tennis team had its final two singles players and its No. 2 doubles team eliminated from the tournament. The Lady Tigers’ No. 3 doubles team of Wrylie Finkle and Shannon Franz advanced to the consolation finals by defeating Meridian Community College’s Kaley Allen and Shelley Munn 8-4. Finkle and Franz will face the doubles team from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in the consolation finals, which will be played Thursday morning.

Despite the disappointing outcome on Wednesday afternoon, Cowley has moved into sole possession of fourth place heading into the final day of the tournament. The Lady Tigers are ½ point ahead of Collin County Community College and one point in front of Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Tyler Community College remains in first place, while Lee College and Hillsborough Community College are second and third, respectively.

Cowley’s Adrijana Pavlovic and Jessica Montemayor each finished 3-1 at the national tournament and advanced to the semifinals before losing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Pavlovic was knocked off by top-seeded Nadia Lee of Lee College (2-6, 1-6) and Montemayor lost in three sets to Hillsborough’s Nachell Proctor 6-4, 3-6, 1-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Montemayor and Brittney Laner also won three matches and advanced to the semifinals before losing to Tyler’s Sun Wen and Antonia Kolovou 0-6, 0-6.
