Lady Tiger tennis beats Southwestern 6-3

Brittney LanerLed by the play of its doubles squads, the Cowley College women’s tennis team defeated Southwestern College 6-3 Thursday in Winfield.

Cowley was victorious in all three doubles contests as they won their opening match on the fall schedule. The Lady Tigers return seven sophomores to go along with freshmen Brittney Berryman and Kalena Pate.

“This was a good opportunity for us to get out and play a high level of tennis,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said. “For the freshman it provided them with a chance to gain some experience and see where they can still improve.”

Jamie Blackim and Natalia Medina teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles and also picked up wins in singles play. Sophomore Shannon Franz, who teamed with Berryman to win at No. 3 doubles, rallied after losing the first set at No. 5 singles to defeat Southwestern’s Katie McNett 6-7, 6-2, 11-9.

“Shannon really stepped up and fought hard to come back and win,” Cobble said. “I was really excited for her, she played a great match.”

Brittney Laner and Wrylie Finkle were also victorious at No 2 doubles as Cowley got solid play throughout its lineup.

The Lady Tigers will now travel to Topeka to take on Washburn University Saturday at 1 p.m.

“I hope to see the stuff we are working on (in practice) pay off,” Cobble said.
