Lady Tigers hit nine national qualifying marksing

Competing in just its second meet of the season, the Cowley College women’s indoor track and field team hit nine national qualifying marks at the Missouri Southern University Radio Shack Indoor Invitational held Friday and Saturday in Joplin, MO.

Cowley athletes were going head to head with NCAA Division II schools as well as NAIA and junior college programs.

“Overall, I thought we competed a lot better than we did last week at Nebraska,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said. “I felt really good about some of the things we accomplished.”

The Lady Tigers had three new national qualifiers in the 3,000-meter run in Robin Ray (10:42.14), Cecilia Burley (10:57.85), and Val Bland (11:07.28). Burley and Leigh Ann Omarkhail also hit national qualifying times in the mile-run, while Marvia Lewin (2:26.84) qualified for nationals in the 800-meter run.

Burley has now qualified for nationals in the 3,000-meter run, 5,000-meter run, and the mile.

“It seems you can put Cecilia in any event and she is going to qualify for nationals,” Phillips said.

Freshman Ruthann Ralstin qualified for nationals in the weight throw as she placed ninth with a throw of 45-5 ¾.

“It is neat to see Ruthann coming around,” Phillips said.

Repeat national qualifiers were Katie Gillmore in the pole vault (10-11 ¾), and the women’s distance medley relay team of Cinnamon Striplin, Cassy Kendrick, Elly Adamson, and Lewin (13:43.89).

Cowley will next compete at the Johnson County Indoor Night Relays in Overland Park this Friday. Field events will begin at 5 p.m. and running events will start at 7 p.m.

“It is a real fast paced meet,” Phillips said. “We will use this as more of a work meet to see where we are against some of the other conference schools.”
