Lady Tiger runners excel at home meet

track and fieldHosting the Tiger Invite Monday in Arkansas City, the Cowley College women’s track and field team had five runners hit national qualifying marks.

Competing against other junior colleges and NAIA schools, the Lady Tigers were led by freshmen Val Bland and Leigh Ann Omarkhail as the duo placed second and third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, and qualified for nationals in the event.

Cowley head coach Mark Phillips likes what he has seen from the talented freshmen runners.

“Leigh Ann continues to amaze me, she has had a phenomenal freshman year,” Phillips said. “Val can be about as good as she wants to be.”

Sophomores Cecilia Burley and Purity Cheriuyot also ran well and hit national qualifying marks in the 5,000-meter run. Burley won the event with a time of 18:25.70, while Cheriuyot finished third (18:46.93).

“Cecilia and Purity ran really well and took advantage of the weather conditions,” Phillips said.

Marvia Lewin hit the Lady Tigers’ other national qualifying mark on Monday as she finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.83. Kate Scott also had a good day and finished first in the high jump by clearing 4-11.

“I am pleased with where we are at with our ladies,” Phillips said.
