Tigers look to build off strong finish to last season

Winning three of its final four games during the 2013 season, the Cowley College men’s soccer team hopes to carry that momentum into the 2014 campaign.

The Tigers return seven players from last season’s team, which finished with a record of 6-7-1.
The sophomores are, Jose Piceno, Sergio Garcia, Oscar Moreno, Lucas Ribeiro, Mark Narongvate, Connor Owen, and team captain Luis Lodino. Piceno, Garcia, and Lodino will continue to anchor the team’s defense, while Owen will move from goalie to defender.

Moreno is the team’s top-returning scorer as he netted three goals as a freshman, while Ribeiro and Narongvate will also help in the midfield.

Erick Galvan, who appeared in 14 games during the 2012 season, returns to the team after a redshirt season in 2013.

The Tiger sophomores are looking forward to the season after having the program dropped and then reinstated this past spring.

“The sophomores that went through that situation have special ownership in the team,” Dos Santos said.
The Tigers have added 14 freshmen to the mix.

“We ended up with a good recruiting class,” Dos Santos said. “We had some late commitments that were nice to see.”

Dos Santos believes freshmen like Leonardo Armando and Gabriel Rosa from Brazil will be key additions to the squad, as will Juan Rosales and Alex Salinas from Palmdale, CA. Roman Gutierrez from Putnam City, OK, and Gio Alvarado from Wichita, KS will also be instrumental in the team’s success.

“We were fortunate to get kids that have talent and desire, and want to buy into our program’s philosophy,” Dos Santos said.

Cowley will play a challenging schedule, which features five home games and seven road contests.
“The mental part of the game will be key for us,” Dos Santos said. How we prepare off the field will dictate our performance.”

Cowley will scrimmage at Southwestern College in Winfield Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. The Tigers will then prepare for their first regular season home game, which will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 30 when they face Northeastern Oklahoma.
