Lady Tiger runners look to move up in the conference
Going from fifth place in the Jayhawk Conference in 2012 to third place in 2013, the Cowley College women’s cross country team will look to continue its climb up the conference standings during the 2014 season.
In order to do that the squad will have to get strong performances from its freshmen, which make up six of the seven runners on the roster.
“We have a very young group, but I am excited to watch them develop throughout the season,” head coach Kevin McDougal said. “I will need to do a lot of coaching with this group, but they come ready to work each day.”
The Lady Tigers will get the season underway on Saturday, August 30 when they host the Tiger Invite at 9 a.m. The meet will be held at the Tiger Athletic Complex in Arkansas City.
Briana Binger, the lone returnee, placed ninth at last year’s Jayhawk Conference Championships.
“I will look for Bri to lead by example and push the girls,” McDougal said.
Brooke Jefferson will also add valuable leadership as she joins the cross country team after competing as a member of the Lady Tiger track and field squad last season.
Aziza Kibet of Eldoret, Kenya, will be a nice addition to the team and will likely run near the top of the pack. While, freshman Jessica Woods joins the team after running for Class 3A state champion Plainview (OK) High School.
Other newcomers to the squad are, Jaedyn Ledesma from Wellington High School, Jayci Manning from Tuttle, OK, and Hannah Nalley from Tulsa, OK.
“Week in and week out the rotation of runners could change,” McDougal said.
Although the Lady Tigers have not won the conference title since 2010, McDougal likes the squad he has assembled for the 2014 season.
“If we can stay healthy I think we can make a run at conference and region titles,” McDougal said.
