You are required to perform 85 hours of service for your
scholarship. You are expected to keep a reflective journal of your experiences.
Your online journals are due weekly. They can either be
emailed to you to answer or it can be answered online through our ACES
WEB CT class.
You are to write in your journal a minimum of two hours
per week. THESE HOURS COUNT FOR YOUR TOTAL 85 HOURS. Therefore,
if you write two hours a week, you will have about 30 hours (15 weeks)
for the semester. This means that your other 55 hours will be spent at
your site and doing club projects. When you turn in your journals once
a month, there should be 8-10 entries for the previous month in them!!
These types of things should be covered in your journal:
- Why you chose this site.
- What you expect to get out of your work.
- What you expect to be able to “give” of
yourself.
- As you go through the semester, concentrate on what
you are getting and what you are giving. Reevaluate these subjects
every couple of weeks.
- Pay attention to things at your site that have to do
with human dynamics. What do you see happening around you?
- How does giving of your time make you feel? Feelings
have the strength to change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors, so be
sure to share those feelings with yourself and others.
- If you are in a class that requires you to do community
service, you can use these hours for your class or the hours that you
do for your class for your scholarship.
- Focus on those things that you are doing in class—can
you relate those concepts to work that you are doing?
- Be honest in your reflections. Let yourself feel what
you are feeling and don’t try to shut those things out.
You must attend meetings for ACES. This helps us to get
a feel for where you are as far as hours go and what kinds of things
you would like to see the club involved in.
These are the meeting dates for this semester:
- None currently scheduled.
Be sure to turn your hours logged sheets into James at
least every other week. We want to help you in any way we can to get
your hours and to stay on top of the work that you need to do. We are
very flexible. If your site is not working out, come and see us and we
will change it!
