Board of Trustees conducts special meeting

During a special meeting of Cowley College's Board of Trustees held June 26 in the President's Private Dining Room inside of the McAtee Dining Center, the Board authorized Chair Jill Long to finalize an updated contract with Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle no later than July 25, 2019.

Board of Trustees Tour College Facilities at Mulvane Campus

Members of the Cowley College Board of Trustees had the opportunity this month to tour Cowley College facilities located in Mulvane. The tour preceded the regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting held this month at the Science, Education, and Academic (SEA) Center in Mulvane. The Trustees toured both the Career and Technical Education Center and the SEA Center. The tour provided Board members a chance to learn more about the facilities and programs that are offered at the Mulvane campus.

Great Western Dining to provide Food Service at Sumner Campus

Representatives from Great Western Dining were on hand to share information on what services they can offer at Cowley College’s new Sumner Campus during the monthly Board of Trustees meeting held Monday in the President’s Dining Room.

Great Western Dining Food Service Director Dawn Williams, District Manager Robert Rogers, and President John Nilges were on hand to discuss what Great Western Dining would provide at the Sumner Campus. They discussed proposed hours of operation for the Dining Center, proposed menu items, and catering options. Williams said flyers will be distributed to local businesses in Wellington to let them know the Dining Center is open to the public.

After discussion, the Board approved the contracts for Great Western Dining to provide food service on the Arkansas City Campus and Sumner Campus as prescribed in the respective contracts.

Board of Trustees have opportunity to tour Cowley’s Wichita Downtown Center

The Cowley College Board of Trustees held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Monday at Cowley College's Wichita Downtown Center located at 532 South Market. Prior to the start of the meeting the Trustees had an opportunity to tour the facility.

Eddie Andreo, associate vice president of distance learning and site management, led the tour and answered questions from the Trustees.

Cowley College's Wichita Downtown Center helped more than 220 students within the month of March. Along with the ability to enroll students, the Downtown Center has a bookstore, computer lab, and admissions representatives that can help with career exploration, financial aid questions, and placement testing.

“We thank Eddie and his entire team for their hospitality,” Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle said.

Cowley College and Central Christian Church partner for future site of Education Center

Members of Cowley College’s Board of Trustees approved the signing of a lease agreement with Central Christian Church in Arkansas City to have the Central Christian Church Annex Building become the site of the Cowley College Education Center during the monthly Board of Trustees meeting held Monday in the President’s Dining Room.

The five-year lease agreement gives Cowley College the option to purchase the Annex Building at the end of the lease.

The facility will be used to train preschool and secondary education teachers.

“The community has been hungry for additional support to help care for preschool age children,” Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle said. “We view this as a good partnership that will provide the future workforce for a Child Care Center.”

Board hears of upcoming events at the Short General Education Center

With construction continuing on schedule at the Sumner Campus Short General Education Center in Wellington, KS, members of Cowley College's Board of Trustees heard about some exciting events planned for the new facility during the monthly Board of Trustees meeting held Monday in the President's Dining Room.

An invitation only gala will take place at the Short General Education Center on Thursday, April 25. Following the invitation only event, the public will be invited to attend an Open House at the Short General Education Center on Saturday, April 27. There will be games, food, and other fun activities planned for the Open House, which is free to attend and open to the public.

Also during Monday’s meeting, Dr. Rittle discussed the upcoming Free Throw Battle fundraiser that will take place Saturday, February 23 in between the Tiger women and men’s basketball games. The Cowley Team Has Beens, made up of administrators, and the Team Tiger Beat, made up of Pep Band members, will compete against each other in the Free Throw Battle with all proceeds going to help the Tiger Beat Pep Band in the purchasing of much needed instrumental Pep Band equipment.

Jill Long takes part in first meeting as Board Chair

Having served as a member of Cowley College’s Board of Trustees since 2016, Jill Long presided over her first meeting as Board Chair during the monthly Board of Trustees meeting held Tuesday, January 22 in the Patrick J. McAtee Dining Center.

Long has been a Certified Public Accountant for more than 30 years. She owns a public accounting firm in Winfield Kansas — JP LONG CPA LLC.

Long is currently the Treasurer of Cumbernauld Village, Secretary/Treasurer of Winfield Economic Development and Past President of Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce. She has also served as the President of the Winfield Public Library, Treasurer of Winfield Isle of Lights, Inc., Treasurer, Winfield Country Club, and President, Soroptimist of Winfield along with many other worthwhile organizations.

JoLynn Foster takes part in final meeting as Board Chair

With Cowley College opening a new campus and exceeding $1 million in fundraising during the past year, Cowley College President Dr. Dennis C. Rittle thanked JoLynn Foster for her year of service during her final meeting as Board Chair during Monday’s meeting of the Board of Trustees held in the McAtee Dining Center.

Along with the opening of the Sumner Campus Technology and Innovation Center and the successful fundraising campaign, Chair Foster also oversaw the college adding several new programs and a growth in enrollment under her leadership.

Dr. Rittle presented Chair Foster with a plaque and thanked her for a job well done.

Chair Foster said it has been an eventful year. “It is nice to see the many accomplishments at the College and to have my name associated with that,” Chair Foster Said.

Board approves annual audit

Receiving a clean audit report, the Cowley College Board of Trustees approved the report of the audit of fiscal and management accounting of the college for fiscal year 2017-2018 during the regularly scheduled meeting held Monday in the McAtee Dining Center. The Secretary of the Board is directed to file the report with the official records of the college.

Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd, LLC. completed the annual audit of all college funds for fiscal year 2017-18. In performing the audit, the accountants examined the validity of financial transactions according to generally accepted accounting principles and state law. In addition, they have been instructed to apply the standards established by the policies of the Board of Trustees.

Board tours Sumner Campus

Cowley College’s Board of Trustees had an opportunity to tour the college’s new Sumner Campus in Wellington prior to the monthly meeting on Monday. The meeting was held in the Sumner Campus Technology and Innovation Center.

Also during Monday’s meeting, the Board had an opportunity to view the construction being done on the Short General Education Center, which will open in the fall of 2019. Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle later showed the Board a video visual of the completed Short General Education Center that was put together by Agora Architecture.

Dr. Rittle praised the work done by Sumner Campus Operations Officer Jan Grace and her team.

“We had a big push to open the Technology and Innovation Center for the fall semester,” Dr. Rittle said. “The future is definitely bright.”

Board hears of upcoming Professional Development Day; interactive series

During Cowley College’s monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees held Monday in the Earle N. Wright Community Room, Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle informed the Board of Trustees that Cowley College will conduct its annual Professional Development Day on Monday, September 24. Dr. Rittle also mentioned the four-part interactive series “Best Practices in Leadership” that he will present beginning Tuesday.

Dr. Rittle praised the work done by Julie Rhoads and her team in preparing the itinerary for Professional Development Day. The day will consist of breakout sessions, a working lunch, and work area collaborative sessions.

“Employees can get specialized training throughout the day,” Dr. Rittle said.

Dr. Rittle also informed the Board that he will share portions of what he has learned at Harvard University’s Institute for Education Management during his interactive four-part series.

Board hears of enrollment increase at Cowley College

Cowley College's Board of Trustees had an opportunity to hear of the college's increase in enrollment during the annual monthly meeting held Monday at Cowley College's Winfield Center in Winfield, KS.

Enrollment currently stands at 2,534 compared to 2,452 on this date one year ago. Enrollment is also up from this date two years ago (2,488).

Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle also discussed the ribbon cutting ceremonies that were recently held at the Sumner Campus Technology and Innovation Center. Dr. Rittle said more than 250 people attended the event and more than 60 people attended the donors’ luncheon. Several federal and state legislators were among those that attended the event and toured the facility.

KOMA/KORA training highlights July Board meeting

Members of the public joined the Cowley College Board of Trustees for Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) and Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) training Tuesday evening prior to the July Board of Trustees Meeting held in the Earle N. Wright Community Room.

The training was held from 6-7 p.m. and provided by Donna Whiteman, assistant executive director of legal services and attorney for the Kansas Association of School Boards.

Whiteman discussed fiduciary duties of elected community college trustees. Trustees must follow policies, focus on management of the college, and evaluate the president.

KOMA ensures public access to information that forms the basis for public decision-making.

Whiteman discussed potential problems and the rules regarding executive session. She also went over the requirements for open records requests and the fees involved.
