Golden Tigers Classes

Class Attendance

Golden Tigers ClassesClass attendance is not required. However, instructors work hard to prepare for these classes. Please let your instructor know if you cannot attend a class session. If the college is closed due to bad weather, we will not hold classes. Information is available on local radio and television stations.

Refund Policy

Refunds are not given if you are unable to attend a class. However, you may transfer to another class if space is available.

Fall 2018 Class Schedule:

SEPTEMBER

Aqua Fun (Session I) – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, September 5th – 28th, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., Family Aquatics Center, ACHS. Debbie Davidson, Instructor. Participants will be led by trained personnel through a series of specially designed exercises that can help increase joint flexibility and improve mobility. Participants will be allowed into the building at 9:25 a.m. and must exit the pool by 10:30 a.m. Please note that you may be sharing the locker room with high school students. Participants are asked to exit the building no later than 10:45 a.m. There is a $3.00 pool fee for this class.

Aerobics (Session I) – Monday and Wednesday, September 5th – 26th, 1:30 – 2:15 p.m., Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. Rikki Hettenbach, Instructor. This energetic and upbeat class is sure to get your body moving. It’s fun and relatively easy with a mix of 50’s to today’s music hits that combine dancing, cardio and light weights for a great total body workout. No class Sept. 24th.

Exercise (Session I) – Tuesday and Thursday, September 4th – 27th, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. Gage Musson, Instructor. Guided exercises to improve joint mobility and stability, muscular strength and endurance, balance and coordination.  The use of light weights and elastic resistance will be implemented.

Restorative Yoga (Session I) – Wednesday and Friday, September 5th – 28th, 11 a.m. – noon, Brown Center, Room 203. Ruy Vaz, Instructor. Restorative Yoga is considered the dessert of yoga. This class is designed for those who prefer a slow, gentle stretch. Great for participants who need to decompress, relax and release tension. Remember to bring your Yoga mat.

Card Games (Session I) – Monday, September 3rd – 24th, 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 205. Debra Holman, Instructor. Learn to play 5 Crowns, Hand and Foot, Kings in the Corner, Skip-Bo, Uno, and Fan Tan. No class Sept. 24th.

Line Dancing (Session I) – Wednesday, September 5th – 26th, 11 a.m. – noon, Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. Debra Holman – Instructor. Learn 10+ line dances, including the Electric Slide, the Cha Cha Slide, and the Cupid Shuffle.

A Matter of Balance (Session I) – Monday and Thursday – September 1st – 28th, 1 – 3 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Kristin Sparks and Joyce Littrell, Instructors. A Matter of Balance is an 8 session structured group intervention that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and exercise to increase strength and balance.

OCTOBER

Cooking Class (Session II) – Wednesday, October 17th, 31st, November 7th, and 14th, 10 – noon, Jennifer Munson’s house. Jennifer Munson, Instructor. Each week we will focus on creating a simple but delicious meal that we will enjoy together towards the end of class. With a focus on the autumn season, we will prepare complete meals and perhaps be introduced to some new ingredients. This is a fun, informal setting with lots of lively discussion and delicious food! There will be a $5 supply fee for this class.

AARP Driver Safety (Session II) – Wednesday and Thursday, October 10th & 11th, 1 – 5 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 205. Ron Upton, Instructor. The Driver Safety program is an 8-hour classroom refresher course. You must attend both session to receive a certificate. Some insurance companies in Kansas give a discount to seniors who complete the course.

Basic Woodcarving (Session II) – Tuesday, October 2nd – 23rd, 1 - 3 p.m., Cherokee Strip Museum. Fred Taylor, Instructor. Participants will learn basic wood carver techniques, safety precautions, and proper use of tools. Participants will complete a basic woodcarving project.

Genealogy: What’s Next? Where Am I? (Session II) – Monday, October 8th – 29th, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Brown Center, Room 131. Ron Upton, Instructor. Participants will work on their genealogy and finding additional information online. They will cover downloading information and pictures, creating files and folders, along with how to use pictures and documents. Bring your information, a laptop (if available), and a USB flash drive.
