Governor's Goal: An undergraduate degree for $15,000 or less

Challenge accepted!

Students completing coursework at Cowley College then transferring their credits to Fort Hays State University can earn their undergraduate degree for less than $15,000 for the length of the degree. This affordable pathway to completing a four-year degree is achieved by completing college coursework while in high school.

High school students taking college coursework exhibit much higher course pass rates because the courses apply to both their college education and their high school education. Furthermore, this approach provides students with less costs and less time to completion of their four-year degree, which equates to more time available to serve in the workforce and increases their lifetime earning power.

Utilizing this approach, the two pathways listed below provide the completion of a four-year degree at a cost to the student of less than $15K for tuition/fees and books.

Degree Options:

Education

This pathway is specifically designed for students interested in pursuing a degree in elementary education and is the most economically advantageous. It can also be modified to include secondary education, if that’s the student’s preference. Cowley College students would complete their first two years of college while co-enrolled in high school and then transfer to Fort Hays State University for their junior and senior years of college education through the Tiger2Tiger pathway.

Kansas residents beginning this program in high school could qualify for approximately 48 credit hours towards their degree at the $49 AcceleRate. Students completing their bachelor’s program would be looking to teach in an elementary school. This pathway places students into the workforce earlier and with minimal postsecondary expense.

Applied Technologies

Students pursuing the applied technologies pathway would be students who have completed an Associates of Applied Science at Cowley College in Non-Destructive Testing, Mechatronics/Manufacturing Technologies, Machine Tool, Welding, or Automotive. These students would have a quality industry credential from Cowley College in high demand fields and would be able to complete the remaining two years of their four-year degree to enhance their management and leadership potential in their chosen industry field.

This pathway is specifically geared to utilize the Cowley College $49 AcceleRate program as well as Senate Bill 155. This drastically reduces the cost of the two-year degree for high school students leveraging this pathway.

Following completion of coursework at Cowley College, students would choose from two options within the Bachelor of Science Degree in Technology Leadership program at Fort Hays State University. (source: FHSU.edu)
