Henrietta Olvera Duran

Class of 1952

Henrietta Olvera Duran Henrietta Olvera Duran and Dan J. Spangler will be honored at Cowley County Community College’s 69th Commencement of May 9, 1992.

Henrietta Duran resides in Pretty Prairie, Kan., where she has owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Restaurant for more than 33 years.

She has been very active in her community, church, and city government. In 1985, she was a write-in candidate for city council and was the first woman elected to city government in Pretty Prairie. She is currently serving her third term as councilwoman until 1995.

Henrietta and her late husband, Salvy Duran, have provided the community with meeting rooms and services over the years. Many civic events are held at the Wagon Wheel, along with meetings of the Lions Club and Rotary Club.

Cowley physical education teacher, Edith Joyce Davis, now 104, was a favorite teacher and mentor of Henrietta. Her two sons, Mike and Jay Duran, received the benefits of Henrietta’s physical education skills as she coached them and others whenever a team needed to be formed in both baseball and basketball. She and Salvy often provided uniforms for the teams.

Henrietta is active in her church, “Our Lady of Guadeloupe,” in South Hutchinson. She has worked diligently on many fund-raising campaigns for her church, schools, and community. In the past, she has made several trips to Mexico with clothing and other essentials for the needy. Often she used her only time off at Christmas to bring cheer and charity to those less fortunate.

Henrietta Olvera Duran was reared in Arkansas City, attended Sleeth and Lincoln schools, junior high and senior high, and graduated from Cowley County Community College in 1952. She is the daughter of the late Benjamin and Juanita Olvera. She married Salvy Duran in September 1953, and they raised two sons, William Michael Duran, and Jay Duran. Jay and his wife Jan have a son, Benjamin Michael Duran, age 3.

Family and friends, her church and the community of Pretty Prairie join us at Cowley County Community College in saying THANK YOU to Henrietta Olvera Duran, outstanding Alumni of the Class of 1952.
