Students, donors pack Wright Room for Endowment Scholarship Reception
More than 200 individuals filled Cowley College’s Earle N.Wright Community Room Tuesday, August 23 for the school’s first Endowment Scholarship Reception in which students receiving endowed scholarships were brought together with the individuals who donated money to fund the scholarships.
Cowley College’s Endowment Association awarded 182 scholarships worth over $113,000 to students for the 2011- 2012 academic year.
“I think all of the folks there were surprised with the number of students helped through endowed scholarships,” Ben Schears, vice president for institutional advancement said. “They are from all walks of life and we were very pleased with the number of students and donors who turned out for the event.”
Schears served as the emcee for the evening, while instrumental music instructor Josh Fleig provided music during the reception.
Schears heard several times from donors about how much they enjoyed meeting
“For the donors it’s an opportunity to see first-hand the life they have helped to impact,” Schears said.
Virginia Donaldson, administrative assistant to Union State Bank CEO and Board Chairman Bill Docking, and friend of the late Kirke W. Dale, was on hand to meet with the recipients of the Kirke W. Dale Scholarship.
“I was impressed with the students, they were very polite,” Donaldson said. “Mr. Dale would have been very proud, it was a great event.”
Schears hopes the students will benefit from taking part in Tuesday night’s reception.
“I believe the students will feel an even greater sense of responsibility for the scholarship they received because of the chance to meet the person that gave them this opportunity,” Schears said.
Haley Rouleau, a sophomore from Wellington, who is a recipient of a Boyer Educational Trust Scholarship, was among the students in attendance.
“It was a really nice night,” said Rouleau. “It was a great turnout and Endowment did a great job with the event.”
Schears and the Endowment Association are already looking forward to hosting the event again next year.
