Brown, Barto earn athletic awards
With Cowley College athletics enjoying tremendous success and ranking 10th in the nation in the current NATYCAA (National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators) Cup standings, a crowd of close to 400 people attended the college’s 2012 Athletic Awards Banquet in the Arkansas City Agribusiness Building.
Former Cowley College athletic director Tom V. Saia, along with Tiger Booster Club President James Schaefer, provided a run down of the Tiger athletic programs. Those in attendance were then treated to a steak dinner and slide show prior to the awards ceremony.
With 18 Student Athletes of the Month recognized at the banquet, it was not easy to pick a Male and Female Student Athlete of the Year. However, this year’s winners were, Gavin Brown of the men’s basketball team and Emily Barto, who is a member of the women’s basketball and volleyball teams.
Able to dominate a game without having to score 20 points a night, Brown did so much for the Tiger men’s basketball team.
Providing valuable leadership to a young squad, he saved his best basketball for the end of the year. In Cowley’s four games at the Region VI Tournament, he Brown, Barto earn athletic awards averaged 7.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists as he established himself as a low post presence.
The statistics don’t tell how valuable he was to Cowley’s success as he helped the Tigers go 49- 18 during his two years at the school.
The business administration major from Junction City, KS achieved a 3.8 grade point average at the school and was named the school’s September, 2011 Male Student Athlete of the Month.
Brown was a member of the Dean’s Honor Roll. He plans to major in business management and hopes to get into coaching one day. He has signed to play basketball at Emporia State.
“I have had the best time of my life here; the school feels like home,” Brown said.
Whether she is spiking volleyballs or grabbing rebounds on the basketball court, Emily Barto can be seen demonstrating her athletic ability throughout the Tiger sports seasons.
She not only shines on the playing court, she also excels in the classroom as evidenced by her being named Cowley College’s September, 2011 Female Student Athlete of the Month.
She helped the Cowley volleyball team capture the program’s first-ever national championship as the team finished the year with a 22-match win streak and a record of 38-2. The team also went unbeaten in the Jayhawk East.
Barto was named the Jayhawk East Freshman of the Year in 2010 and was selected as a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference/ Verizon Wireless Player of the Week during the 2011 volleyball season.
As a member of the Cowley women’s basketball team, she helped the squad capture the Jayhawk East title during the 2010-2011 season and a 22-10 record in the 2011-2012 season.
She posted a 3.63 GPA and was a member of the President’s Honor Roll.
“I have had a great experience at Cowley and am grateful to all my coaches, teammates and my parents for their support,” Barto said. “This is a huge honor and I am very glad I came to school at Cowley.”
Barto has also signed to play volleyball at Emporia State University.
It was then time to announce the winners of the Conrad and Janet Jimison Tiger Booster of the Year. Conrad spent 37 years working at Cowley College prior to retiring in 2005.
This year’s recipient of the award was Mark Speck. A 1986 graduate of Cowley College, Speck currently serves as the vice president of the Tiger Booster Club.
