We Heard From


Chika Amuneke, Class of 2012, lives in Wichita, KS.

Darci Mann, Class of 2009, lives in Hesston, KS. She is employed as a Youth and Discipleship Minister at Hesston United Methodist Church.

Kari Nilsen, Class of 2008, lives in Andover, KS. After Cowley, Nilsen received a Bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University in 2011 and is currently at WSU working towards a PhD in the field of community psychology. She has two children, Ami Dean 6, and Mia Frances 3.

Renee (Bruce) Combes, Class of 2004, and her husband, Travis, live in Augusta, KS. Renee is a Trial Clerk II at the Sedgwick County Courthouse, while Travis serves as an Environmental Inspector for the City of Augusta.


Kelvin Durham, Class of 1988, and his wife, Stacey, live in Milwaukee, WI. Kelvin has been a school teacher for the past 21 years and has been coaching girls basketball for 12 years. Stacey is a college professor. Kelvin played basketball for two seasons at Cowley and has fond memories of the people at the school and the Tiger fans. The couple has four children, Nia 21, Deja 20, Kiana 15, and Justice 10.


Bobbie (Hawkins) Aupperle, Class of 1951, lives in Stillwater, OK. She is a retired registered nurse and has five children, Michael 61, Ronald 58, Linda 57, Richard 50, and Bart 48.


Marjory (Leland) Blackstock, Class of 1939, lives in Houston, Texas. Blackstock attended Arkansas City Junior College during the depression and worked in a private home for her room and board at the college to help pay for her tuition. While at ACJC, she learned the skills needed to become a secretary and worked at Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, OK for more than 30 years. Now at 93, she has three children, six grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren. She also has two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren through her step-daughter. She enjoys reading and keeping up with activities at the college through the Alumni Newsletter.
