Cowley PTK named Five Star Chapter
Cowley College's Alpha Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently
received Five Star status for a sixth consecutive year, while the organization's vice president, Will Weeks, was presented with the Distinguished Chapter Officer
Award at the regional level.
In order to achieve Five Star status, chapters must participate in district, regional and national conferences, campaign for new members, and hold an induction.
They also have to submit Honors in Action and College Projects, which require researching themed topics, completing action-based projects, working with administrators, students and community members, and reporting on the outcomes and submitting awards to the national organization in writing.
In addition, chapters are required to meet twice monthly and to chronicle their chapter events.
"I'm very proud of the students who have worked hard and put in lots of time to make the chapter successful again this year," PTK cosponsor Deb Layton said.
"These students are just by nature the ones who get involved and get things
done, but the challenge is that they are often overextended, so it's a fine balance."
Layton also praised Weeks' work ethic and dedication to the organization.
"Having Will in class last year was an indicator of how great he'd be for the chapter," Layton said.
"The minute he became a member, he started contributing. When anything needs done, we can always turn to Will, and he sees to it."
