Boit wins KU cross country meet

It was going to happen sooner or later. Saturday was the day.

Josephat Boit, the heralded Kenyan on Cowley County Community College’s men’s cross country team, turned in the fastest time in school history to win the Bob Timmons Invitational at the University of Kansas’ Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence.

Boit, a sophomore, covered the 8,000 meters (5.1 miles) in 25 minutes, 16 seconds to win the men’s division. Boit’s victory also boosted Cowley to a second-place finish behind KU. Cowley head coach Mark Phillips was pleased with his team’s performances.

“We had a really good meet,” Phillips said. “The kids really competed hard. It was an awfully good day.”

Cowley’s women took fifth place, paced by Ruth Kinyanjui’s 15th-place finish in 21:03 over the 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). That time ranks 13th on Cowley’s all-time charts.

What makes Boit’s finish so impressive is the course he did it on. Rim Rock Farm is hilly. It’s also the site of this year’s National Junior College Athletic Association national meet in November. Teammate Jake Conley turned in a solid performance, finishing 16th with a time of 27:28, the seventh-fastest time in school history. Freshman Tim Marshall nearly cracked the top 10 among Cowley’s fastest times, finishing 24th on Saturday in 27:59. That time is 12th on Cowley’s all-time list.

“The course was a true test for us, and it’s one of the toughest courses in the Midwest,” Phillips said. “Our women avenged last week’s loss to Cloud County, and the men avenged last week’s loss to Butler.”

Cowley’s next competition will be the Tiger Invitational Friday evening at Camp Quaker Haven. The women’s race begins at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 6:30 p.m.
