Cross country teams capture Tiger Invitational


With individuals finishing first and second, Cowley County Community College’s cross country teams swept first place at the Tiger Invitational Friday evening at Camp Quaker Haven.


Ruth Kinyanjui and Rachel Harper finished 1-2 to lead Cowley’s women to a first-place finish over Hutchinson, while Josephat Boit and Jake Conley were first and second to lead the men to victory, also over Hutchinson.


Just four schools ran in the meet, held under sunny skies and a dry course. Kinyanjui finished the two-mile run in 12 minutes, 46 seconds. Harper was second in 13:02. Sarah Hasenbank also turned in a top-10 placing, finishing eighth in 14 minutes. The three helped Cowley’s women to a 27-28 team victory over Hutchinson.


On the men’s side, Boit covered the three-mile course in 16 minutes flat, followed by Conley in 16:18. Five other Cowley runners cracked the top 10: Julius Times, fifth, 16:32; Tim Marshall, sixth, 16:51; Mike Harney, seventh, 16:57; Jon Antar, eighth, 17:00; and Nathan Newby, ninth, 17:07. Cowley’s men easily defeated Hutchinson (21-44) for first.


The women’s record improved to 8-7 on the season, while the men are now 14-2.

Cowley’s next action will be in Joplin, Mo., Saturday for the Missouri Southern Stampede. The women’s race begins at 9 a.m., followed by the men at 9:45.
