Cowley cross country teams run into tough competition

JOPLIN, Mo. — Saturday was one of those cross country meets that let Cowley County Community College coach Mark Phillips know exactly where his teams stood midway through the season.

Cowley was one of just a few community colleges that competed at the Missouri Southern University Stampede. The men’s team, led by a fourth-place finish by Josephat Boit, finished an impressive eighth place with 262 points, while the women’s team finished 16th with 481 points. The meet was dominated by four-year schools from NCAA Division I, II, and NAIA.

“We got to experience some big-time cross country and came away with a wealth of knowledge and some pretty good times,” Phillips said.

Boit covered the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 34 seconds, the fastest time in Cowley history for that distance. Five other Cowley runners finished in the top 100: Jake Conley 46th, Tim Marshall 68th, Julius Times 70th, Mike Harney 92nd, and Nathan Newby 96th. Twenty-seven teams competed with 209 runners in the race.

On the women’s side, Ruth Kinyanjui was the top finisher for the Lady Tigers, finishing 75th with a time of 20:05 over the 5,000-meter course. That ranks as the fifth-fastest 5,000-meter time for the women’s program. Rachel Harper also recorded a top 100 time of 20:34 to take 87th place. Twenty-seven schools competed on the women’s side. There were 184 runners in the race.

The Cowley men are now 32-9 on the season, while the women are 19-22. Cross country team records are calculated by the number of teams you beat at each meet (wins) and the number of teams that beat you (losses).

Both Cowley teams have the week off from competition and will travel to Stillwater, Okla., Oct. 4 for the Oklahoma State Jamboree. More four-year competition will be on hand for that meet.
