Tiger golfers battle wet weather in Hutchinson
HUTCHINSON - With temperatures hovering around 45 degrees and rain falling, the Cowley County Community College men's golf team placed eighth out of nine teams at the Hutchinson Tournament held Monday at the Highlands Country Club.
The host Hutchinson Blue Dragons won the tournament with a team score of 611, while Dodge City finished a close second with a 612. Cowley ended the 36-hole tournament with a team total of 684, ahead of only Allen County (688).
The Tigers were led by Arkansas City freshman Brandon Herman, who shot rounds of 91 and 77 to finish with a 36-hole score of 168. Dodge City's Johann Gudjonsson (70-74-144) finished one shot better than his teammate Tyler Cummins (69-76-145) in winning the tournament.
Cowley sophomore Ben Gill, the Tigers' No. 1 golfer, did not make the trip to Hutchinson because of a family matter, thus leaving the Tigers with four freshmen playing in the tournament.
Other Cowley golfers at the tournament were, sophomore Jimmy Ginal (87-85-172), freshman Trent Macy (85-89-174), freshman Ryan Hobbs (85-90-175), and freshman Eric Fox (86-90-176).
"The Highlands Country Club is a pretty challenging course," Cowley coach Nathan Pryor said. "Four of our five guys had never seen the course before, which made it even tougher."
After two conference tournaments, the Tigers have yet to earn any team points as they have placed seventh and eighth in two conference events. Only teams that finish in the top five at the conference tournaments earn points.
Cowley will have some time to work on things as it doesn't return to action until the Johnson County Tournament Oct. 6-7 in Leawood.
"I hope the guys will have a little stronger mental game and a little more focus the next time out," Pryor said. "The Johnson tournament will be a good indicator as to where we are in our progression."
Team scores: (1) Hutchinson, 310-301-611; (2) Dodge City, 299-313-612; (3) Johnson County, 314-322-636; (4tie) Kansas City, 332-318-650; (4tie) Barton County, 321-329-650; (6) Coffeyville, 333-332-665; (7) Pratt, 340-341-681; (8) Cowley, 343-341-684; (9) Allen County, 347-341-688.
