Cowley doubles team places second at regional qualifier
WICHITA — After winning its first two matches at the Omni Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Women’s Midwest Juco Regional Qualifying Tournament, Cowley County Community College’s No. 1 doubles team of Jackie Gilmore and Jill Hocker suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 defeat to Seward County in the final match of the tournament.
Had Gilmore and Hocker defeated the doubles team of Veronica Bamsemer and Alejandra Miranda, the Lady Tiger duo would have qualified to compete at the National Tournament held Oct. 16-18 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
“I was pleased with our performances,” first-year coach Rebecca Meyer said after her team competed Saturday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Center. “All of my players really impressed me. I knew we had a good team, but the way we competed in this tournament really reinforced that.”
Cowley’s other doubles team, made up of freshman Jenny Crank of Winfield and Alicia Sanders of Arkansas City, lost its first match of the tournament but bounced back to win the final two matches.
In singles play, Gilmore and Hocker each won their first two matches before losing in the semifinals. Crank lost her first match before finishing strong by winning the consolation bracket. She finished with a 3-1 record at the tournament.
Cowley will now prepare to play at Southwestern College Tuesday at 3 p.m.
“ I hope we carry over the success that we had at the tournament,” Meyer said. “I would also like to see us improve our team communication and close out matches a little better.”
