Cowley golf places seventh out of nine teams

LEAWOOD — With nobody placing in the top 20 at the Johnson County Tournament played Sunday and Monday at Iron Horse Golf Club in Leawood, the Cowley County Community College men’s golf team placed seventh out of the nine conference schools.

Trent Macy, a freshman from Rose Hill, was the Tigers’ top finisher for the second time in four fall tournaments. Macy played consistent golf as he shot an 80 (39-41) in the first round and a 77 (38-39) in Monday’s final round to finish in a tie for 21st out of 44 golfers.

“I have been real pleased with Trent’s play and his consistency,” coach Nathan Pryor said. “He still has some areas to improve on, but he is coming along as one of our strongest freshmen.”

Ben Gill, who is 19th in the conference points standings, finished in a tie for 26th with a 36-hole score of 160 (79-81). Other Tiger golfers at the tournament were freshman Ryan Hobbs (83-86-169), sophomore Tanner Smith (89-82-171), and freshman Brandon Herman (85-87-172). Herman, who was the Tigers’ top finisher at the Hutchinson Tournament on Sept. 29, struggled to his highest scoring round of the fall season.

Dodge City’s Tyler Cummins, the Jayhawk Conference’s individual points leader, helped lead the Conquistadors to a first-place finish at the tournament as the top individual placer. Cummins had the tournament’s only sub-70 round as he shot a 69 in the first round and a 70 in the second.

Johann Gudjonsson, Cummins’ teammate, finished second with a two-day score of 144. Johnson County’s Brian Donnelly placed third with a 145 to help his team finish second, 10 shots back of Dodge City.

The Tigers will now prepare for their final fall tournament, which will be hosted by Newman University, and played at Terradyne Country Club in Andover on Oct. 20-21.

“I just want us to have fun and see what we can do,” Pryor said.
