Annual lip-sync contest Thursday at Cowley

The lights are low, the microphones have been tested, and the crowd is whispering in anticipation. Once again Cowley County Community College is “Puttin’ on the Hits!”

“Puttin’ on the Hits,” a lip-sync contest for Cowley students, staff, faculty and administration, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Robert Brown Theatre inside the Brown Center on the main campus. Admission is $2 per person.

Event organizers, Humanities Department Chair Dejon Ewing and Director of Theatre Scott MacLaughlin have high expectations for this year’s contest. They are anticipating a great turnout with lots of fun, high energy and a big crowd.

“It’s always neat to see people work together as groups or clubs, but even more so, it’s great to see instructors do silly things you would never see them do outside the classroom,” Ewing said.

Participants will have three minutes to entice the crowd with their song and dance routines. Students compete for cash prizes, while the staff, faculty and administration compete for a traveling trophy.

MacLaughlin remembers two years ago when he actually took the trophy with a grand performance as Britney Spears. PEAKS Program Director Jason O’Toole and MacLaughlin performed their own version of “Oops I Did It Again.”

“I remember the coaches talking about having no real competition,” MacLaughlin said. “So Jason and I gave them some competition.”

Puttin’ on the Hits is a fundraiser for Act One Drama Club. The club raises money for activities and trip.
