Annual lip-sync contest Thursday at Cowley College
Who says $2 can’t buy you a night of entertainment?
Cowley College’s annual Puttin’ on the Hits lip-sync contest will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Robert Brown Theatre inside the Brown Center on the Arkansas City campus. Tickets are $2 and may be purchased at the door.
This event, which began in the late 1980s, is one of the highlights of the fall semester at Cowley. Dejon Ewing, Humanities Department chair and emcee for the event, came up with the idea shortly after she arrived as a full-time instructor.
“We have so much fun with this because it’s always a variety of acts,” Ewing said. “People get to see students, faculty and staff on stage and, a lot of times, out of character. It’s just a great evening of entertainment.”
While most of the acts lip-sync in groups, occasionally there are solo acts. Each year brings out something new, but cross-dressing and raids on the costume shop are normal.
During brief intermissions, audience members will play a Cowley version of “Name That Tune” for cash prizes.
The top three student acts each receive cash awards, while faculty, staff and administration acts vie for a special trophy. Ewing hires three celebrity judges to evaluate the acts.
“It’s absolutely hilarious every year,” Ewing said. “I know the audience will enjoy every minute of it. It’s well worth the two dollars.”
