Richerson named December Student of the Month

With a strong desire to help others, it’s nice to see Cowley College sophomore Brittany Richerson honored for her own hard work in the classroom as the Arkansas City native was recently named the school’s December Student of the Month.

Richerson, the daughter of Vern and Ginger Richerson of Arkansas City, has an older sister, Heather, 23, and a younger sister, Katy, 15, that is a freshman at Arkansas City High School. Grandparents are, Bill Rice, Arleta Rice, and Rose Rice of Arkansas City.

Richerson is a recipient of the Patrick J. McAtee Endowment Scholarship, a Dean’s Honor Roll member, and received the Best Techie award in Act One as a freshman. She has a GPA of 3.76 and is involved in several activities at Cowley. She serves as the Vice President of Act One and is a member of Campus Christian Fellowship.

She also serves as work-study in the Humanities Office and is very involved in theatre. She was the assistant stage manager in last year’s production of “Oliver”, and served as the stage manager for “Proposals” and “Les Miserables”. She also was the “shepherdess” in the recent production of Big Bad.   Richerson has enjoyed working with Scott MacLaughlin, Cowley College director of theatre and theatrical services. “He has been a big influence in my college career,” Richerson said. She also speaks highly of her professors.

“I have loved every professor I have ever been associated with at Cowley,” Richerson said. “I am going to hate to see my time here at the school come to an end, I love it here.”
Richerson, who was recently named among the Who’s Who for Junior College Students, enjoys being active in her church in her free time. She works with her church’s Vacation Bible School and directed the church’s Christmas play.

She looks up to her mother, Ginger, who has raised three girls while currently going back to school at Cowley to earn a teaching degree. “She has given me the drive to accomplish my goals,” Richerson said.

Richerson was surprised to be named Cowley College’s December Student of the Month.
“I am honored and excited, I had no idea I would receive the award,” Richerson said.
Richerson is majoring in social work and plans to transfer to Wichita State University. She hopes to someday work at an adoption agency. “I have a love for children and would like to give an opportunity to people who cannot have children to be able and become parents,” Richerson said.
